From November 4 to 6, 2024, the ARSI 2024 Conference (Advanced RF Sensors and Remote Sensing Instruments), organized by ESA – ESTEC, took place in Noordwijk, the Netherlands. The event gathered leading experts in radar technology and remote sensing to discuss groundbreaking advancements and their applications, with a particular focus on climate research and its critical global implications.
CRISTALair: Monitoring Polar Ice in a Changing Climate
CRISTALair succeeds ASIRAS (Airborne SAR/Interferometric Radar System), which operated in both the Arctic and Antarctic from 2004 to 2019. The main improvement in CRISTALair lies in its ability to acquire data simultaneously in both the Ku and Ka bands, advancing the Science Readiness Level (SRL) of dual-band algorithms and processes. In addition to the dual-band radar, CRISTALair will integrate an airborne laser scanner, a color-infrared camera, and ancillary equipment to ensure precise positioning and orientation of the interferometer. Furthermore, man-made external reflectors will facilitate the performance evaluation of the instrument.
The development of CRISTALair began in March 2023, and the first flight campaign for testing is scheduled within the year, where the full measurement capabilities will be evaluated.
Monitoring Polar Ice in a Changing Climate
MetaSensing, represented by Filippo, presented the CRISTALair project, which is dedicated to monitoring the polar ice regions—key indicators of the impacts of global warming. Through advanced radar technology, the project provides precise, actionable data on ice melting patterns, contributing to the broader efforts to address climate change and its environmental effects.
The CRISTALair project is notable for its innovative approach to data collection, utilizing sophisticated RF sensors to enhance the accuracy and timeliness of polar ice monitoring. These advancements are critical for policymakers and researchers, supporting efforts to mitigate the effects of climate change and develop effective solutions.
Engaging Presentations for a Diverse Audience
The ARSI conference is renowned for its highly technical discussions, but MetaSensing’s presentation of CRISTALair bridged the gap between complexity and accessibility. Through meticulous preparation and a clear, engaging delivery, the project’s significance was conveyed to a wide audience, including participants without extensive technical expertise. This approach not only highlighted the technical innovations behind CRISTALair but also emphasized its real-world impact on climate research.
A Legacy of Contributions to ARSI
MetaSensing’s participation at ARSI 2024 builds on its successful involvement in previous conferences, including the presentation of the OSCAR project. This continuity underscores MetaSensing’s commitment to advancing the field of remote sensing and strengthening collaborations within the scientific and technological community.

Looking Forward
The ARSI conference reaffirmed MetaSensing’s role as a key player in radar technology for climate monitoring. Engaging with industry leaders and researchers provided valuable insights and opportunities for collaboration, paving the way for future innovations to address global challenges.
CRISTALair exemplifies how advanced technology can play a pivotal role in understanding and combating the effects of climate change, and MetaSensing remains dedicated to driving progress in this critical area.
